Hi there! I’m Lisa, the heart and hands behind Sugarcoated by Lisa, a cake school and bespoke cake business nestled in a small village in Ireland. My story is one of sweet transformations, life changes, and plenty of icing mishaps.
A Family Legacy with a Twist
The building where my studio now stands used to be a bustling village grocery shop, owned by my family from the 80s until it closed in 2014. After my father passed away, the shop and the house I grew up in were put up for sale. It sat there, waiting for a new chapter.
Fast forward to 2020, and life had thrown me a few curveballs. My marriage had ended, and I was facing some big decisions. Buying back the shop and house seemed like a crazy idea, but it felt right. It was home.
Building a Dream in Challenging Times
With a global pandemic underway, I decided to turn the old shop into something new—a cake studio. It was a risky move. I was new to business, navigating major life changes, and working alone. To top it all off, I had a hefty loan to repay. Talk about pressure!
Big birthday cakes weren’t exactly flying off the shelves during lockdowns, so I got creative. Enter: treat boxes. People loved them, and I was busier than ever. It kept the lights on and gave me hope.
Opening the Doors and Facing Fears
As the world slowly opened up, so did my studio. I started small with workshops and classes, mostly for kids. Let’s be honest—teaching kids felt less intimidating than adults. They don’t judge your piping skills!
The more I taught, the more I grew. As a self-taught baker, I’ve made every mistake in the book. But those mistakes became lessons. And those lessons became something I wanted to share.
The Birth of My Online Cake School
Having navigated the ups and downs of starting a business alone, I realized I could help others avoid the same pitfalls. That’s how my online cake school membership was born. It’s a place for hobby bakers and budding cake entrepreneurs to learn, grow, and, most importantly, enjoy the process.
A Sweet Adventure
Running this business has been one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I’ve ever done. There have been late nights, flopped cakes, and moments of doubt. But there’s also been a lot of laughter, joy, and frosting-covered triumphs.
So, welcome to Sugarcoated by Lisa. Whether you’re here for a bespoke cake, a class, or just to share a laugh, I’m thrilled to have you along for the journey.
Here’s to sweet beginnings and even sweeter adventures ahead!
